Workaround 3: Installing And Using Google Drive

Google drive is free and has a lot of extra features, but is subject to some google telemetry and tracking, somewhat moreso than MS One Drive. Because of that Google drive is not installed by default on any Linux system and needs to be handled by either your browser or your file manager. The Linux gnome desktop comes with the tools to add Goggle drive to your file manager. Because Linux Lite is an XFCE desktop system we will need to install the Gnome Control Center with the Gnome Online Accounts setup tools, but it’s quick and easy and won’t mess up your system if you follow the method below.

Open up your Linux Lite Terminal on your Linux Lite 6.x installation running in hyper-v and run the command below:

sudo apt install gnome-control-center gnome-online-accounts –no-install-recommends

and enter you sudo password when prompted.

Let the install process run and enter Y when prompted and hit enter.

When the process completes and your prompt returns type in the command below:

XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=GNOME gnome-control-center

Hit enter and the gnome control center will appear.

Select Online Accounts and then Google from the menu.

Sign in with your g-mail account and password

Scroll down your account options and click allow.

The google account toggle options window will appear. I usually toggle everything off but Files.

Close the window and your terminal will return your prompt. Type exit and hit enter and your terminal will close.

Open up Thunar, your Linux Lite file manager, and google drive will be there for you to use.

On your Windows 10/11 host it’s simplest to just bookmark the Google Drive sign in page and log in from there to access your files.
